Studying the perceptions of beauty across the globe can offer a better understanding of the unrealistic standards often set by the media and perpetuated within each culture. This project took a photo of a female and asked different countries to alter it to reflect their beauty standards. The variation between each country is both surprising and educational.

Original

As part of their Perceptions of Perfection project, U.K. medical serviceSuperdrug Online Doctor, worked with a marketing agency to alter this original image to suit each country’s ideal beauty. They contacted female designers in 18 different countries.

United Kingdom

Instructions asked the photoshoppers to have the woman suit their country, “The idea is to Photoshop and retouch this woman to make her more attractive to the citizens of your country.” They went on to instruct, “We are looking to explore how perceptions of beauty change across the world.”

China

Designers made changes to the woman’s skin and hair color, the shape of her face, and altered the size of her body. China had the slimmest version with their model coming out at 102 pounds with a BMI of 17.0.

Mexico

Esther Honig had a similar experiment exploring global beauty in 2014 which was focused on facial features: hair, skin, and makeup. For this project, designers were encouraged to change her body, “You can modify clothing, but her form must be visible. All other changes, including those to her shape and form, are up to you.”

U.S.A.

The USA version was a moderate 128 pounds with a BMI of 21.3, which was around average of the countries submitted. They also did little to alter the rest of her appearance.

Argentina

Perceptions Of Perfection wanted this project in the hands of females to see their point of view of beauty in their own nation. “We focused on female designers, as we wanted a woman’s view of what her culture finds attractive,” the description added, “and to understand more about the pressures they face.”
